Short answer

Withdrawal rights and defective-goods remedies are different. Withdrawal periods, exceptions and notice methods require transaction-specific review; a shipping receipt alone should not be assumed to complete every step.

The small print on the order page can matter later

Pre-contractual information, seller details and terms are often skimmed when ordering. When a problem arises, those records explain who contracted with whom and on what terms. Buying through a platform does not make the seller’s identity irrelevant.

The Ministry of Trade’s distance-contract guidance explains information and performance duties as well as withdrawal. Some transactions exclude withdrawal or impose special conditions, so unlimited return rights should not be assumed for every online purchase.

Notice and physically returning the product may be separate steps

Keep a record of the channel used to notify your decision to return. A platform request number, email or application record helps establish dates later. A telephone call does not provide the same ease of proof as a written record.

When shipping the product, preserve carrier details, delivery receipts and records of the parcel’s contents. Applicable return conditions and costs are determined by reviewing current rules alongside the contractual information.

A faulty product is more than a simple return

Sending back a device that does not work and returning a usable product under withdrawal rights rely on different grounds. Be clear why the request is made. Describing the defect and desired outcome helps the assessment.

When, how and by whom payment was collected also belongs in the file. For a refund problem, prepare payment records together with the seller’s or platform’s responses. This makes it clearer at which stage the dispute arose.
